Why you're safe with Skipton Online

If you would like more peace of mind about the security of our online accounts, here is some information on how we make sure your details - and your money - are safe:

  • We use two factor authentication, which means that we do not rely on passwords and memorable data alone – we also issue a Grid Card that adds another layer of security by providing additional information to prove that you are the account holder. Many of the top banks still do not use this kind of technology. Read more about grid cards.

  • We use an anti-phishing device that asks you to select a photo and choose a phrase when registering for Skipton Online – this is shown to you when you log in so that you know you are on the genuine Skipton Online site and not a bogus site.

  • We verify your identity when you register for Skipton Online. If this cannot be done electronically we ask for physical evidence. This reduces the risk of identity theft.

  • We automatically log you out of Skipton Online after 10 minutes of no activity. This is to protect you in case you forget to log out.

  • We continually review our security systems to ensure that the highest levels of safety are balanced with ease-of-use for our customers.

  • We monitor transactions for suspicious activity.

  • We will never ask you to give us your log in details over the phone or in a branch. We will ask other questions if we need to verify your identity.

How the Grid Card works

The Grid Card is the same size as a credit or debit card and can easily be carried around in your wallet. It works on the same principle as a bank card in that you need both something you have and something you know.

As well as your login ID, characters from your password and the answer to one of your memorable questions, you may also be asked to input characters from your grid card eg H1, B2 or E4, as shown on the example.

Tips for keeping safe online

  • Check for either the padlock symbol on your browser or that the web address starts with 'https' to know that the page is secure.
  • Never share your security or login details with anyone, or write them down.

  • Use a shredder to destroy any documents that could be used to steal your identity.

  • Always remember to log out after finishing your Skipton Online session.

  • Be very careful when using shared or public PCs, especially if you can't be sure what protection that PC has, or who might be able to see the details you enter.

  • Always ensure your PC has up to date virus protection and firewalls.

  • Never click on links in emails claiming to take you to a login screen.

  • Stay aware of current scams. Details can be found at:
